Identity Theft
Work that is handmade and hand-formed contains the maker’s identity. I want to make 500 brooches that contain blatant forms of my own identity: passport numbers, addresses and bankcard numbers. These numbers and letters will only make sense when the piece is together at the beginning of the project. If any pieces are returned at the end of the project they will only contain fragments of my identity. I wanted to package the brooches onto postcards as they were taken away. Participants could return the postcards with a snippet of information about their own identity - middle names, place where they were born, first phone number - information that on its own is irrelevant, but somehow forms part of their identity. I envisage that these pieces will be stored in drawers underneath the cart.
