This is perfect for ankle biter prizes....it's propped up in the kitchen to be awarded when something goes well. Much better than a star chart. No photo as yet, but will do shortly!

The Dr Maths Randomness Show

At the Manchester Science Fest (www.manchestersciencefestival.com/whatson/drmaths) I gave a show called........ The Dr Maths Randomness Show. Understanding if events are random or have some underlying structure is a fascinating area of mathematics, filled with great discoveries. In the short run, chance may seem to be volatile and unfair. Considering the misconceptions, inconsistencies, paradoxes and counter intuitive aspects of probability, it is not a surprise that as a civilization it has taken us a long time to develop some methods to deal with this. In antiquity, chance mechanisms, such as coins, dice and cards were used for decision making and there was a strong belief in the fact that God or Gods controlled the outcome. Even today, some people see chance outcomes as fate or destiny – “that which was meant to be”. As part of the show the a number is selected at random by the audience. This lucky red number is then used to find the only red x This show will soon be live to checkout at www.alchemistcafedublin.com/

Trophies / And the winner is...

Trophies acknowledge and award victory and accomplishments, either staying with the winner for a lifetime, or just for a year. And the winner is... provides an alternative which recognises those around you for the good they do, and shows your appreciation. It can be rewritten as many times as the owner likes, with its chalk board plaque. Hang it on your wall, put it on your mantle-piece, say something nice to a family member, partner or a flatmate - or you can always give yourself a compliment.
